Frozen Facts of the Perito Moreno Glacier

Love this post.1

Reminders of past ages stay with us in the present. During cold winter months, the lavish green trees are replaced with the serenity of ice crystals and sparkling snow. Two and a half million years ago, we entered into the last Ice Age. The encapsulating frozen conditions covered large percentages of the Earth and the oceans. As the climate shifted, there was a new beginning on the horizon. Warmer temperatures incited icy layers to melt raising water levels everywhere. Nature is rooted in the tradition of cycles. The waters and land descended into transition over an approximate 11,000 years ago. The memory of the Ice Age is evident in structures comprised of snow and ice called Glaciers. The monumental size and strength of Glaciers has stunned the world for centuries. One of the largest Glaciers to remain is The Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina.

The grand sight is an awe inspired experience. Visitors are able to tour the massive Glacier that is estimated to be at least 18,000 years old. Modern day settings tend to glaze over the past with fast paced amenities. Through the hustle and bustle of busy schedules, it is imperative to take a moment and appreciate the Earths journey. The Perito Moreno provides a glistening sense of history, nature and the icy path that led us to our future.

About the Perito Moreno Glacier

One of the first things you will note when you arrive to the Glacier site is the magnitude of its span. Perito Moreno is nineteen miles long with an average reach of 240 feet above the water and an additional 300 feet below. The Los Glaciares National Park holds the Perito Moreno and The Southern Patagonian Ice Fields which is a sum of 4,800 square miles and eighteen smaller glaciers. Perito Moreno is a member of the park that is deemed a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

About the Perito Moreno Glacier

There is a viewing platform built along the Glacier for tourists and locals to get a closeup look. For safety reasons, there is a minimum distance met with signs depicting where there is no entry allowed. A main attraction of Perito Moreno is also a part of the danger it presents. Teetering on the lines of ominous and inspiring, a loud creaking groan can be heard echoing in the area. When Glacial pieces separate from their structure, the sound is distinct. This natural occurrence may also present shards of ice that can be fatal if you are too close. There have been a few dozen instances of reported deaths due to the sharp points.

Traveling to Perito Moreno

Located an hour and a half away from El Calafate in Argentina, most will find accommodations in the town. Tours can be booked, and bus tickets purchased if you prefer to go on your own.  You can drive in your own or rented car; however it has been said a bus ride is the easier route. Be prepared for your visit with layers of clothes to keep warm and a camera to capture the poetic views of Glaciers, Mountains and Visionary Forests.
